Description
Villa Mairea designed and constructed by Alvar Aalto in 1938, is located in forests a few miles away from Noormarkku, Finland. Aalto stated that the function of buildings is to bring human closer to nature, which gives rise to the unique design of the Villa Mairea. Its floor plan is made into the L-shape, separating the family accommodation from open terrace. The lawn and the swimming pool are situated in the inner side of the L, which largely integrates nature into daily life. The accommodation wing has large ribbon windows to provide natural light and views of nature while the terrace wing is only covered by the flat roof and supported by columns. These two points show the purpose of blurring the lines of the villa into the natural environment. Furthermore, the organic curve of the pool and wave-like parts of the villa are designed to fit the natural topography. Wood, stone and other local materials are used to build the villa, delivering a natural feeling. In conclusion, the form makes the villa function as the connection between human and nature, which evidently elucidates the statement “Form Follows Function”.

In addition to the program of the house, how do the movements happen that “integrates nature into daily life”?
